Paediatric First Aid

The Paediatric First Aid course is for people intending to act as a First Aider within a child care setting. The course is designed to provide the skills necessary to diagnose and treat common injuries or illnesses, and to give life support, at the same time as maintaining the care and comfort of the casualty.

This is a highly interactive and informative course of 12 hours duration; usually 9.00 am until 4.00 pm. We can run this course at weekends. The course covers all of the subjects stipulated in the EYFS, 2014, which are:

  • Planning and dealing with emergencies
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Trauma
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Fractures
  • Poisoning
  • Foreign bodies
  • Eye injury
  • Bites & stings
  • Hypothermia and hyperthermia
  • Asthma
  • Fitting
  • Diabetes
  • Meningitis
  • Sickle cell anaemia

This course can help your school comply with the Families and Children’s Act, 2014, by covering the following medical conditions:-

  • Asthma The management of day to day, mild to moderate asthma, as well as the acute phase. This includes the use of metered dose salbutamol inhaler and spacer device in accordance with the NICE guidelines, 2013 and Department for Health “Guidance on the use of emergency Salbutamol inhalers in schools September 2014”.
  • Allergies Severe allergy and anaphylaxis, the use of antihistamines and adrenaline auto injectors including the:- Meda Epipen, ALK-Albelo Jext Pen iMed Systems Ltd. Emerade pens with the appropriate check sheets and care plans, in accordance with the Resuscitation Council Guidelines 2013.
  • Hypoglycaemia Attacks in the diabetic patient, and the use of glucose gel.
  • Epilepsy Status epilepticus and the use of midazolam as “Epistatus”.
  • Savlon Dry For use with cuts, abrasions and small burns.
  • Jungle “Insect and bite spray” For use with insect bites and stings.
  • Burns The use of “Coolgel” or “Watergel” dressings.
  • Sickle cell crisis
  • Advisory External Defibrillation For use in cardiac arrest, combined with pocket masks and chest compressions, in accordance with the Resuscitation Council Guidelines, 2013. The training includes shockable and non shockable rhythms, heart conditions such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Long Q-T syndrome, Patent Foramen Ovale, and Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome.

At the end of this two day course, you should receive a Paediatric First Aid certificate, to comply with the EYFS, 2014, which is valid for three years. The course does not include adult first aid.

The paediatric first aid course is incorporated into our First Aid at Work (for Schools) course, at no extra cost. This represents a considerable cost saving, training your staff to First Aid at Work, paediatric first aid and a large proportion of the medical needs likely to be met in school
